- One of the most common ways people quickly get in trouble with debt is by not making monthly payments on bills on time. Make sure you’re paying all of your bills on time, the late fees you’ll get charged will often cost more than the payment itself! Contact your lender if you need more time to make payments.
- Another common way to have debt build up is by getting charged insufficient funds fees or writing bad checks. Even worse, your bank and the company you’re paying could both charge you different fees.
- Check your bank account and credit card statements every month. If you find any problems with the charges they should be reported as soon as possible, otherwise you will end up paying for them.
- Try organizing your debts based off which are the largest and which carry the highest interest rates. Attempt to pay off the highest interest rates and largest debts first as these will only cost you more money in the long run.
- Don’t add any major purchases to your debt if possible. Items like a new computer or television are luxuries, if you aren’t able to pay for them using cash, you probably shouldn’t purchase them.
- In the situation where you are unable to complete these tips on your own or you still have a large amount of debt, you should strongly consider debt management counseling immediately through Debt Gift!
